Small-Business E-Commerce to Swell

Nearly 97% of small-business owners expect their e-commerce revenue to stay the same or increase during the next one to two years, according to a Small Business Research Board study.

"The data demonstrate that there are still many businesses of all sizes which either do not have a Web site or, if they do have a site, are unable to conduct transactions that would benefit their business," said Gregg M. Steinberg, Business Today president, in a statement.

"The detailed study also shows that success on the Internet is not dependent on the size of the business," Mr. Steinberg said.

More than four in 10 respondents did not have Web sites.

Nearly 44% of businesses with sites did not sell products or services and therefore did not generate e-commerce revenue.

About 45% of small-business owners said their firm had one site on which they sold goods or services. Just under 9% had two to five e-commerce sites.
