ManpowerGroup, the world leader in innovative workforce solutions, says companies continue to be extremely cautious about their hiring plans in the face of recent market turbulence and economic uncertainty as the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics revealed nonfarm payroll employment remained unchanged in August, with no jobs created during the month, and the unemployment rate also remained static at 9.1 percent.

Nonfarm payroll employment was unchanged (0) in August, and the unemployment rate held at 9.1 percent, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported. Employment in most major industries changed little over the month. Health care continued to add jobs, and a decline in information employment reflected a strike. Government employment continued to trend down, despite the return of workers from a partial government shutdown in Minnesota.

Elevated gas prices have helped to drive a surge in used compact car prices, according to a data analysis by Edmunds.com, the premier online resource for automotive information. Edmunds.com’s data reveal that consumers paid about 10 percent more for used three-year-old compact cars in July than in January. By comparison, prices for this segment rose just 1.6 percent over the same period in 2010, and 1.1 percent in 2008, the last time gas prices crept over $4/gallon.

Online advertised vacancies were down 163,900 in August to 3,990,600, according to The Conference Board Help Wanted OnLine® (HWOL) Data Series. The August drop follows a decline of 217,000 in July and a decrease of 100,000 in June. The Supply/Demand rate stands at 3.35, indicating there were just over 3 unemployed for every online advertised vacancy in July, the latest monthly data available for unemployment.
