Even with a turbulent economy, Americans are more optimistic about their personal financial futures than that of the overall economy, and those who have planned have a more upbeat outlook, according to a new survey released by Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards, Inc.

During times of job uncertainty, employees historically tend to take greater precautions to protect their jobs, such as taking less vacation or sick days. However, a recent survey by leading international staffing agency, Aerotek, shows that 65% of respondents have no qualms about using some or all of their allotted vacation time. Could this be a sign of the much talked about economic recovery? Perhaps, according to the Aerotek survey conducted with 1,000 U.S. men and women ages 25 - 54, which examined work and vacation habits, as well as ways employees spend their time off.

Mortgage rates increased this week, following a nine-week streak of declines. The benchmark conforming 30-year fixed mortgage rate is now 4.71 percent, according to Bankrate.com's weekly national survey. The average 30-year fixed mortgage has an average of 0.41 discount and origination points.

The Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) increased 0.2 percent in May on a seasonally adjusted basis, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported. Over the last 12 months, the all items index increased 3.6 percent before seasonal adjustment.

Real average hourly earnings for all employees rose 0.1 percent from April to May, seasonally adjusted, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported. This change stemmed from a 0.3 percent increase in average hourly earnings, partially offset by a 0.2 percent increase in the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U).

The Producer Price Index for finished goods rose 0.2 percent in May, seasonally adjusted, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported. This advance followed increases of 0.8 percent in April and 0.7 percent in March. At the earlier stages of processing, prices received by manufacturers of intermediate goods climbed 0.9 percent in May, and the crude goods index declined 4.1 percent. On an unadjusted basis, prices for finished goods moved up 7.3 percent for the 12 months ended May 2011, the largest year-over-year gain since an 8.8-percent advance in September 2008.

As marketers struggle to define the value of social media to their brands, new Knowledge Networks findings demonstrate that consumers are much more likely to discover new products and brands or refer to social media before making purchase decisions than they were just a year ago. In fact, the purchase decisions of 38 million 13 to 80 year olds in the U.S. are now influenced in various ways by social media - up 14% in just six months.

U.S. import prices increased 0.2 percent in May, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported, after advancing 3.0 percent in March and 2.1 percent in April. A 0.2 percent drop in fuel prices partially offset higher nonfuel prices. U.S. export prices rose 0.2 percent in May following a 0.9 percent increase the previous month.

U.S. business leaders have turned pessimistic, according to Grant Thornton LLP’s most recent Business Optimism Index, a quarterly survey of U.S. business leaders. Only 45% believe the U.S. economy will improve in the next six months (down from 64% three months earlier), 40% plan to increase staff (down from 49%), while 12% plan to decrease staff (up from 10%) The Index itself is down 7.1 points to 62.6.
